The image shown is Drifting, thought that was the final painting in Josh's last show.

New painting for the next show,

Lifted, 40"x30", acrylic on panel

I really enjoyed adding the punch of color on this one.

Howl I

30"x40", acrylic on panel,

There was a uprooted tree root base that was resting above ground, the structure caught my eye, I had a vision of an elk's head emerging or attached to the structure exhaling leaves.

An Elks head coming thru a tree stump whilst exhaling leaves with a fox, a rabbit and some squirrels looking on, did you check the Best Before Date on that thingyaleekie soup?

Edit apparently polictical correctness has censored the word c0ckaleekie soup....what is this world coming to?

I just had an odd thought of driving down the road, looking up and seeing an eagle carrying a bear holding onto a giant 76 gas sign!

Could happen!

very, very nice stuff. Out of curiosity, how long does it take you to crank out a painting, Josh? And do you work multiple paintings at a time or one in, one out?

Thank you for the comments on the new work, they have been a challenge but very enjoyable to work on.

Hey Jazz, thanks for the questions.

Many of my ideas take form over a long period of time. Sometimes it is a dream, or something I saw out in the world that ignites the idea. the ideas spend a while incubating in my sketchbook, and then it is a matter of time when I feel that I know what the image means to me and have the right imagery to move forward.

My process is roughly about a week to three weeks depending on the complexity of the image. I try to put in around 8-12 hours with a few eye breaks. I have been thinking of working with oils again which would make the painting process much much longer.

I still have the desire to work on a large piece for a year or two to see what would happen.

This new body of work is unique in that I am working with bringing in what could be called a ritual process. The process is not new but I never really considered it to be near the core of my work. I am not talking about drug induced states or anything like that, it is a personal visualization process I am working with. Maybe turning forty recently had something to do with it, it suddenly has become the core or inertia of the work. Basically I tapped into something that I did not entirely trust before, and now I do. My hesitancy may have been that the imagery that came to me was very strange. It is a fine line when working in this style, to hold onto poetry and try to avoid creating work that leans towards outsider art, or making work that is bizarre for the sake of being bizarre. It is important that people are able to connect with the work and discover for themselves a story line or meaning.

Thanks again for the feedback and thank you Jazz for the question,

I am finishing a new painting today, I think it is turning out pretty well, I will post a pic soon,

Josh

Thanks for the reply. As an artist (though certainly not of your caliber) I completely know what you mean. From time to time, I'll pull out the pencils and just work from a stream of consciousness. I've always been fascinated by the work of Sam Keith (the comic's artist) and how his work seems to just bleed from his subconscious to the page. I'm probably projecting, but that almost seems to be what The Maxx was all about.

Anyways, I'm sure I speak from every one here when I say, I'd love to see any rough drafts of stuff that you consider too "out there" to follow through on. You never know, maybe the fans will eat it up!

Thanks again for being an artist who is willing to mingle with the people!

great question Colin and an equally good answer Josh. That's some man hours in each piece.
Post some of your work Colin in the members thread just brought it back to life.

Really loving Lifted, the composition is really fantastic. Imagine working with the bright orange was fun for Josh, certainly brings alot to the piece.

Got to say this painting just gets better the longer you look at it. There is so much going on.

Really glad to hear the comments on the new work. I am working on a number of new themes and have to say that though they are draining to work on I really think they feel like home.

Stay tuned for more, though you might have to wait for Jonathan to send out the preview, I don't want to steal his thunder ;)

Be well,

Josh
